The Story of The Cambridge Estate
A Barn With a Story to Tell
Some places are beautiful because they are new.
Others are beautiful because they have a story.
The Cambridge Estate is the latter.
At the heart of the property stands a remarkable 1875 barn, built with the craftsmanship and character of a bygone era. Its original timber, historic details, and beautiful structure tell the story of an Iowa farm built to last.
For generations, this property was a working family farm. The surrounding land was planted and harvested year after year, and the property remained in the same family for more than 100 years.
In 2023, the historic barn began a new chapter as an event venue called The 1850s Homestead, opening its doors for celebrations while preserving the character that makes it so special.
Preserving What Makes It Special
When you step inside The Cambridge Estate, you won't find a brand-new building made to look old.
You'll find the real thing.
The original character of the 1875 barn remains at the center of the experience. The timber. The craftsmanship. The history. The details that could never be recreated today.
Our vision is to preserve that character while bringing the space into the beauty and comfort of modern day.
Thoughtful upgrades, beautiful finishes, modern amenities, and comfortable gathering spaces allow today's guests to experience the best of both worlds—a historic Iowa barn with the warmth of its past and the beauty and functionality of today.
A New Chapter
In 2026, the property entered another new chapter when it was purchased by the Johnson family.
We feel deeply honored to become stewards of a place with such a long history.
Our goal isn't to erase what came before us.
It's to build upon it.
The historic barn will remain the heart of The Cambridge Estate while thoughtful improvements throughout the property brighten the spaces and elevate the experience for weddings, celebrations, corporate gatherings, and retreats.
The historic farmhouse is being transformed into a five-bedroom guest house, giving wedding parties and guests a beautiful place to stay together on the property.
The private suite is becoming a dedicated honeymoon suite—a quiet, beautiful place for newlyweds to begin their first days together.
The property that once welcomed generations of one family will now have the privilege of welcoming generations of families to come.
From Iowa Farmland to Lavender Fields
For generations, the land surrounding the Estate was used for traditional Iowa agriculture, primarily growing corn and soybeans.
In 2027, the landscape will begin a beautiful transformation.
The fields surrounding The Cambridge Estate will become a lavender farm, creating rows of color, fragrance, and beauty across the property.
The lavender fields will provide a distinctive backdrop for wedding photographs and create a beautiful setting for outdoor ceremonies.
The property's wildflower fields will also be thoughtfully cultivated and developed, creating additional outdoor spaces for ceremonies, photographs, cocktails, and quiet moments throughout the property.
The goal is not to disconnect the Estate from its agricultural roots, but to give those fields a new expression.
The land will continue to tell a story.
Just a different chapter.
A Place Where Stories Continue
There is something meaningful about celebrating life's biggest moments in a place that has already witnessed generations of them.
A barn built in 1875.
Fields cultivated for generations.
A farmhouse that was home to a family for more than a century.
A venue that began welcoming celebrations in 2023.
And now, a new generation of owners committed to preserving its beauty and creating what comes next.
At The Cambridge Estate, we are preserving the beauty of what has been while thoughtfully creating what comes next.
Because we believe the best places don't simply hold history.
They become part of yours.
